Navigating coming out can feel tricky, but there are practical and easy ways to support our teams throughout the journey.

Despite social and legal progress, many transgender and non-binary people do not feel safe and secure enough to disclose their gender identity at work. Fear of social rejection and workplace discrimination can lead many to withhold this very personal information from others. This can leave many folks feeling unsafe, alienated, and burnt out at work.

Thankfully, there are excellent resources that can help empower both our transgender and cisgender team members as they navigate coming out together. In this 60 min webinar, we will explore research on workplace environments and have nuanced discussions about “coming out” in the workplace. This will include both coming out planning for transgender and non-binary team members as well as support strategies for cisgender team members. The session will conclude with a practice activity where attendees will apply their new skills and knowledge.

Participants will leave with an increased understanding of “coming out” and disclosure in the workplace, how to develop a coming out plan, and how to be a supportive and affirming peer to someone who is coming out.

Participants will be able to:

  • List one to two common reasons why team members might choose not to come out in the workplace
  • List one to two actions one might take to show support for a transgender or non-binary peer who is coming out
  • Name one consideration someone might have when planning to come out in the workplace
