Not all representation is good representation. Join TTI’s Maybe Burke as they deep dive into analyzing common stereotypes and tropes used to portray transgender and non-binary people’s stories in different types of popular media.

Since Laverne Cox was the face of “The Transgender Tipping Point” in 2015, there has been a rise in representation for trans and non-binary characters in TV, film, and theatre. Unfortunately, not all representation is positive representation, and many stories that are still being told today are using tired tropes and stereotypes about transgender and non-binary communities that are having negative impacts both for both performers and audiences.

In this hour-long webinar, we will take a look at some of those common stereotypes, review recent examples as well as unpack historical contexts, and examine how those stereotypes might be impacting our day to day lives off the screen and in the real world.

Participants will leave with an understanding of how fictional stereotypes can have negative and harmful impacts on trans and non-binary people in the real world.

Participants will be able to:

  • Identify common tropes used to portray trans and non-binary people
  • Describe ways that stereotypes can lead to discrimination and harm community members.
